Your Built-In Documentation: The WhatIs System

Accessing WhatIs Locally

Estimated reading: 0 minutes 9 views

GameCatalyst comes with its own documentation website that runs right on your computer. It is called WhatIs, and it is one of the handiest features you will use. No internet required. No login. Just a local web page packed with everything you need to know about commands, server health, and AI guidance.

How to open WhatIs:

  1. Make sure GameCatalyst servers are running. Open the Dashboard in Unity and click Start in the Controls tab. Wait for the Discovery dot to turn green.
  2. Open any web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge — anything works).
  3. Type http://127.0.0.1:5001/WhatIs in the address bar and press Enter.

That is it. You will see a dark-themed web application with navigation tabs across the top and content panels below. It matches the look and feel of the Dashboard so everything feels familiar.

WhatIs is always active:

You cannot turn WhatIs off. It is a permanent part of GameCatalyst’s core infrastructure, and that is by design. As long as the Discovery Server is running, WhatIs is available. The only setting related to WhatIs is allow_controls, which controls whether the Advanced Settings config editor tab is accessible. The rest of the site — commands, status, guidance, plans, support — is always there.

No internet required:

WhatIs runs entirely on your local machine. It does not make external requests or depend on cloud services. If your internet goes down, WhatIs still works perfectly. This is especially useful during long development sessions where you want reliable, instant documentation without worrying about connectivity.

Quick access from Unity:

You do not even need to remember the URL. The Dashboard Status tab includes a direct link that opens WhatIs in your default browser with one click. You can also bookmark the URL for quick access later.

When to use WhatIs:

  • You want to look up a command’s parameters and see examples before asking Vex to use it
  • You want to check which servers are running and whether your AI client is connected
  • You want to browse or manage workspace plans from a browser instead of the Plan Wizard
  • You want to edit GameCatalyst configuration settings visually without touching JSON files
  • You want to submit a support ticket to Vexstorm Studios

Think of WhatIs as your personal reference desk. It is always open, always accurate, and always local.
