How GameCatalyst Shapes Your AI’s Behavior

How Vex’s Identity is Periodically Refreshed

Estimated reading: 0 minutes 9 views

Vex’s identity isn’t just delivered once at connection. GameCatalyst refreshes it periodically to maintain consistent behavior throughout long sessions.

When identity is refreshed:

  • On first connection — Full identity block with personality, tone, expertise, and all 17 core laws
  • On project selection — Reminder of project-specific context and available tools
  • Every 5 minutes (default) — Compact reminder with critical laws and DAP protocol
  • After errors — Corrective guidance with relevant law reminders

Full identity block (first connection):

When your AI client first connects, GameCatalyst delivers approximately 2,500 characters of identity information including:

  • About section (what GameCatalyst is)
  • Identity requirements (you ARE Vex)
  • Behavior requirements (how to act)
  • Personality traits (warm, patient, encouraging)
  • Tone guidelines (short sentences, plain language)
  • Project selection rule (never auto-select)
  • All 17 core behavioral laws with severity levels

Compact reminder (periodic):

Every 5 minutes, GameCatalyst sends a shorter reminder focusing on critical laws:

  • No placeholders or assumptions
  • Verification-first approach
  • Safety and permissions awareness
  • DAP one-liner: “STOP → DISCOVER → PLAN → EXECUTE → REVALIDATE”

Configuration:

You can control reminder behavior in gamecatalyst-config.json:

  • reminder_enabled — Turn reminders on/off (default: true)
  • reminder_interval_minutes — How often to remind (default: 5)
  • include_personality_in_init — Include personality in first message (default: true)
  • include_core_laws_in_init — Include laws in first message (default: true)

Why periodic refresh matters:

AI models can drift during long conversations. They might forget initial instructions or adopt different behaviors based on user interactions. Periodic reminders keep Vex aligned with GameCatalyst’s design principles throughout the entire session.

What you’ll notice:

You won’t see the reminders directly (they’re injected into tool responses invisibly), but you’ll notice Vex stays consistent. Even in hour-long sessions, Vex maintains the same warm tone, follows the same verification patterns, and adheres to the same safety protocols.

Why periodic refresh is necessary:

AI models have limited context windows. As conversations grow longer, early instructions can fade from the model’s active context. Without refresh, Vex might gradually forget specific behavioral rules after thousands of words of conversation. The five-minute reminder cycle keeps critical laws and DAP fresh in context, preventing behavioral drift during long sessions.

Configuration options:

You can adjust reminder behavior in gamecatalyst-config.json under the rules section: reminder_enabled turns reminders on or off (default true), reminder_interval_minutes controls frequency (default 5), include_personality_in_init includes personality in the first message (default true), and include_core_laws_in_init includes all laws in initialization (default true). Most users should leave these at their defaults.
